1. Sidney Myer

Sidney Myer was a prominent Australian philanthropist and businessman. Born on February 8, 1878, in South Melbourne, he was the founder of the Myer department store chain. Throughout his life, Sidney Myer made significant contributions to various charitable causes, including education, health, and the arts. He was also instrumental in the development of the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, an iconic outdoor performance venue in Melbourne. Sidney Myer passed away on September 5, 1934.

2. Dame Nellie Melba

Dame Nellie Melba, born Helen Porter Mitchell on May 19, 1861, in Richmond (adjacent to South Melbourne), was a world-renowned Australian operatic soprano. She achieved great fame and acclaim internationally, performing at prestigious opera houses and captivating audiences worldwide. Melba was one of the most famous singers of the late Victorian era and the early 20th century. Her exceptional talent and contributions to the world of classical music left an indelible mark on the art form. Dame Nellie Melba passed away on February 23, 1931.

Michael Klinger is a former professional cricketer born on July 4, 1980, in South Melbourne. He represented the Victorian Bushrangers and Western Australia in domestic cricket and has also played in various Twenty20 leagues around the world. Klinger was known for his consistent performances and leadership qualities, serving as captain for multiple teams. He retired from professional cricket in 2019, leaving behind an impressive legacy in Australian cricket.

5. Robyn Davidson

Robyn Davidson, born on September 6, 1950, in Brisbane, Queensland, is an Australian writer and traveler. Although not born in South Melbourne, she is closely associated with the area due to her memoir "Tracks." In 1977, Davidson embarked on an epic solo journey across the Australian Outback, walking approximately 1,700 miles from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean. Her inspiring story was detailed in "Tracks," which became a best-selling book and was later adapted into a film.
